“Can we leave yet? This is boooring,” whined Tracie as Mom pulled into the antique mall’s parking lot.

“Tracie, we haven’t even gotten out of the car yet!” her older sister, Dana, said. “Come on, it’s not that bad. We’ll find treasures.”

Tracie rolled her eyes. Mom and Dana loved antique shopping. Tracie couldn’t understand how picking through unwanted musty, dusty junk was fun.

Tracie shuffled behind Mom and Dana into the barn lined with rows of old stuff. It smelled musty. Mom and Dana talked excitedly about who knows what. Tracie didn’t care. She wanted to leave. “Can I wait in the car?” she asked.

“Look at this washboard!” Mom held up a wooden rectangular item with wavy metal. “Before washing machines, people washed clothes with these.”

“We’re getting rid of our washing machine?” Tracie asked, eyes widening.

Dana laughed. “No, it’s a decoration.”

“Why decorate with junk?” Tracie asked. “Nobody wants it.”

“Something is worth the amount someone is willing to pay for it,” Mom said.

“How much are you paying for that junk?” Tracie asked, eyes narrowing.

“Twelve dollars,” Dana said. “And it’s not junk to me!”

“What?” Tracie said. “For twelve dollars, I could buy candy to share with all my friends! Well, if I had any.” Tracie scowled. “Horrible Robbie said I was ugly today, and everybody laughed. Nobody played with me at recess.”

Mom hugged Tracie. “Do you know how much you’re worth?”

Tracie shrugged. “More than that piece of junk.” She pointed to the washboard and giggled in spite of herself.

“Way more,” Mom agreed. “Something is worth as much as someone will pay for it, remember? How much did God pay for you?”

Tracie thought. “I guess he paid for me with Jesus?”

Mom nodded. “How much is Jesus worth?”

“A million dollars? Wait, that’s not enough. A billion dollars? Uh, probably not enough either. I don’t know—how much?”

“Jesus is too expensive to have a price—He’s priceless. And that’s how much God values you. Just like you calling that washboard junk doesn’t make it junk to me and your sister, what someone else says about you never changes the truth about what you’re worth to God.” Pearl Allard

How about you?

Do you know how valuable you are? You are worth more than you might think! God bought you with the blood of His beloved Son, Jesus. Your worth never changes, no matter what anyone says. God already paid for you, and He says you’re priceless.
