Today's Verse

Acts 16:16-26 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

“If only I were running track with my friends, thought DJ as he looked forlornly out his hospital window. Suddenly, a burning itch caused him to quickly squeeze his finger under the cast on his leg. Why did I have to get hurt skateboarding? He brushed away a tear with his hand when he heard someone come in.

“Hi, DJ!” It was Pastor Jason. He smiled widely as he gave DJ a robust handshake. “I brought you a worship CD, and the hospital gave me a portable player you can use. Would you like me to put it on for you?”

DJ shook his head. “I’m not in the mood.”

“It’ll make you feel better,” said Pastor Jason. “Giving God praise helps when you’re going through a hard time.”

“How?” asked DJ. “All I can think of is how the rest of my school year is ruined. Look!” He pointed to his leg. “It’s broken. The doctor said I won’t be able to run for a long time. I don’t see how praising God will help me feel good about not being able to walk and missing the cross country race.”

Just then, a little girl toddled into the room and fell onto the floor. A man immediately rushed over to the crying child. She lifted up her arms as the man reached down, picked her up, and left the room, apologizing for the intrusion.

“Did you see that, DJ?” Pastor Jason asked.

DJ nodded. “Yeah, so?”

“So that’s what we’re supposed to do when we fall down in life—reach for Jesus and lift Him up in praise,” Pastor Jason said. “When we remember that He saved us and promises to be with us in all the troubles we face in life and use them for good, we can praise Him instead of feeling sorry for ourselves. When we worship Him, He lifts us above our problems by reminding us who He is and what He’s done for us.” Pastor Jason stood up. “Well, I’ve got another church member to visit. I’ll be praying for you, DJ.” He patted DJ on the shoulder and started to leave.

“Wait,” said DJ, smiling sheepishly. “I think I’m ready to listen to that CD.” – Beth Anne Ingram

How about you?

Do you find it difficult to praise Jesus when you’re feeling down? The next time you feel sad or discouraged, remember how much He loves you and raise your heart in thanksgiving anyway. Praising and worshiping Him will help you see your problems in a different light as you remember He’s in control and is always with you. You might even find yourself singing and clapping too!
