Today's Verse

Matthew 24:36-44 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

“This vacation has been a blast,” said Isaac as he and his dad walked down a narrow alley in a historic town, licking their ice cream cones. A minute later, Isaac pointed to a window overhead. “Dad! Look!”

Dad looked up. An orange cat sat on the window sill, one paw hanging out. It seemed to take no notice of them but continued to stare out the open window. “What is it staring at, I wonder?” Dad murmured. Isaac shrugged, and they continued their walk.

On the way back to their hotel, they passed the same building and found the cat still staring out the window. “That cat looks like it’s waiting for something to happen,” Isaac remarked. Dad nodded, and they watched the cat in silence for a few moments.

“Excuse me!” said a voice behind them. They got out of the way as a boy on a bike rolled past and parked under the open window. The cat gave a loud meow and, to their shock, jumped down.

The boy grinned and got off his bike. He picked up the cat, which continued to meow loudly. As the boy petted it, the meows fell into quiet purring.

Isaac and Dad continued on their way, but Isaac kept thinking of the cat. “So…that cat was just waiting for its owner to get back?” he asked.

Dad nodded. “It obviously loves him and was watching for him to return.” He paused, then added, “It reminds me that the Bible tells us to watch and wait. Jesus is coming back again, and He wants us to be on the lookout for Him.”

“Oh yeah!” Isaac said. “But that doesn’t mean we should just sit around and wait like that cat did, does it?”

“No,” Dad said. “We need to point others to Jesus as we wait for Him to come again. Sadly, not everyone knows Jesus as their Savior. His return will not be a happy time for those who haven’t put their trust in Him. We need to tell people Jesus loves them and that He died and rose again to save them so they can be ready for His return too.”
