Unseen Heroes
It was a warm autumn morning, and Kacie and Faith were helping their elderly neighbor, Mrs. Davenport, weed her flower gardens. They finished the garden at the front of the house just as Mrs. Davenport came out with a pitcher of lemonade.
“Oh, girls! You’re doing such a wonderful job!” Mrs. Davenport said as she poured lemonade into two cups and offered them to Kacie and Faith. “Here, have something cold to drink.”
“Thank you!” said Kacie, taking one of the cups. “Did you know you have a lot of worms in your garden, Mrs. Davenport? I pulled out one as long as my hand! I tossed it in the weed bucket.”
“Oh, honey! You can toss out the weeds, but don’t toss out the worms. They’re my unseen heroes!” Mrs. Davenport said.
“What do you mean?” asked Faith.
“Well, those worms wriggle through the dirt and make holes so air can get into the soil. They also eat all the dead leaves, bugs, and roots each year and turn them into fertilizer, which makes the soil very good for growing my flowers!” explained Mrs. Davenport. “Just because you can’t see the worms doing their work doesn’t mean they aren’t important.”
The girls worked the rest of the morning and then went home for lunch.
“It looks so much better without those ugly weeds,” Faith told her mom. “I’m glad we could help her out. She said she has arthritis and can’t keep up with the flowers anymore.”
“Yeah, and she also told us that all those slimy worms we dug up are really important for keeping the soil healthy, even though we usually can’t see them!” Kacie said between bites of her sandwich.
“Those worms remind me of you girls,” Mom said. Kacie and Faith glanced at her curiously. “They do their job underground where no one sees them. Worms don’t get credit for all the work they do to keep our gardens healthy and beautiful, and many of our neighbors will never know all the work you did to help Mrs. Davenport with her flowers. But God sees your good deeds, even when no one else does, and He knows you do them because you love Him. You are His unseen heroes.” – Kendra Angle
How about you?
Do you like getting credit for the good things you do? Have you ever done something nice just to get noticed? It’s not a bad thing if people praise you for good work or a helping hand, but that shouldn’t be the reason you do good deeds. Serve Jesus by helping others and showing His love to them. Even if no one else notices, He does!
