Today's Verse

Psalm 19:7-11 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

“What smells so good, Mom?” asked Rylee as she put her school books on the kitchen table. “It smells like…” She sniffed the air. “It smells like Grandma’s backyard when the lilacs are blooming.”

Mom nodded. “You’re right, Rylee. Aunt Lisa gave me perfume for my birthday. It’s called ‘Lilac Love.’ It’s over there on the table.”

Rylee picked up the bottle. “Can I try some?”

“Sure,” said Mom, so Rylee took off the cap and sprayed some on her arm.

Over the next few weeks, Rylee would often smell lilacs and know her mom had been using the new perfume. “Can I use some too?” Rylee would ask, and Mom would say yes.

When Rylee and her mom passed the perfume counter at a department store one day, Rylee stopped to look. “Mom, there’s a bottle of ‘Lilac Love’ just like yours.” Rylee peered closer at the bottle and gasped. “Mom, look!” she exclaimed, pointing to the price tag. “It’s expensive! Aunt Lisa probably got it at a discount since she works at that cosmetic company. Did you know it cost this much?”

“No, I had no idea! I’ve been using it just about every day, and it’s almost gone! If I had known how expensive it was, I would have saved it for special occasions.”

Rylee giggled. “It’s just like what my Sunday school teacher said about the Bible.”

“The Bible?” asked Mom in surprise. “What did your teacher say?”

“She said lots of people own a Bible, and it’s full of treasure. But many of us don’t understand how valuable it is,” Rylee replied. “See? It’s just like you and the perfume. You had no idea it was so valuable.”

“You’re right, Rylee,” said Mom. “The Bible is even more valuable than a bottle of expensive perfume. And the wonderful thing about the Bible is that even if we use it every day—as we should—we’ll never run out of its treasure. Every time we read it, it can help us know more about Jesus and learn to trust Him better.” She smiled. “Every time we smell my perfume, it will remind us of that.”

“Yep.” Rylee grinned. “And even when your perfume runs out, we’ll always have the treasure of God’s Word!”

How about you?

Do you realize how valuable the Bible is? It tells us who God is and what He did to save us. It explains how we can have eternal life with Jesus. It tells of God’s promises, His constant care, and the perfect peace He offers. Read and study it to find the treasures it contains. Then be sure to put its truths into practice.
