Trustworthy Driver
“Silas! Emerson! Get up,” said Mom early one morning. “I’ve laid out clothes for you. Put them on and go out to the van.”
Silas blinked his sleepy eyes. “It’s dark outside,” he murmured. “What’s up?”
“It’s a surprise,” said Mom. “I’ve got to get your sisters up. Just get ready and go to the garage. Dad is out there.”
Silas and Emerson moved slowly, trying to rub the sleepiness from their eyes. Finally, everyone was settled in the van. “Where are we going?” Emerson asked.
“Just trust me,” Dad replied. “Have I ever taken you anywhere that wasn’t a good place for you to be?”
“But where are we going?” Silas persisted.
“I’m sure we have a driver we can trust,” said Mom. “Put your heads back and rest a while. Have a little nap. Soon you’ll see where we’re going.”
Silas and his brother and sisters tried to be patient as they rode along, but they were eager to know where their parents planned to take them. It seemed like they drove a long time. They didn’t think they could sleep, but they closed their eyes anyway. When the car finally stopped, they quickly sat up and saw that their parents had brought them to a big amusement park. They all shouted in delight.
The next day at church, Silas told his teacher about their adventure. “We had the best time!” he said. “It was extra special because it was a surprise for us.”
“You know, that’s kind of like what our heavenly Father does for us,” Mr. Holt said. “God takes us places in life we don’t know about ahead of time.”
“But we don’t always like what happens,” said one of the kids in the class.
“Not always,” said Mr. Holt. “But even when we face hardships, He surprises us by using them for good in ways we couldn’t imagine. We can rest safely knowing we belong to Jesus and that He’s in the driver’s seat of our lives, even when we’re not sure where He’s taking us.”
Silas nodded. “I didn’t know where my dad was taking me yesterday, but I trusted him, and it turned out to be a great trip. I’m glad I can always trust Jesus to take me to good places too.” – Holly F. Cepeda
How about you?
Do you trust God when He allows things to happen that you don’t like or understand? Do you continue to trust Him when you feel sick, are hurt by a friend, or have to say goodbye to someone you love? When you do, you’ll find that He will never let you down. He will always bring you to a good place.
