Today's Verse

Matthew 24:36-44 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

Lydia felt a knot in the pit of her stomach. Today was the day of the spelling bee, and she would be competing against the best spellers in her grade. “Mom,” she said frantically, “you know that book my teacher gave me to help me get ready for the spelling bee? I can’t find it anywhere. Have you seen it?”

“No,” said Mom. “Where did you use it last?”

“Actually, I’ve hardly even looked at it,” Lydia said. “It always seemed like there was plenty of time, but now all of a sudden, the day is here!”

“Well,” said Mom, “I don’t know where you put it, but I think you’re a little late if you haven’t studied by now.”

“Mommy!” Lydia’s little sister called from her room. “Can you help me with my shoes?”

“I’m sorry, Lydia,” said Mom, “but I can’t help you search for the book right now. I need to take Dara to day care. Maybe Dad can help you before he takes you to school.”

Lydia looked at Dad, who was finishing a cup of coffee. “I’ve got an early meeting at work, so we don’t have much time,” he said, “but let’s give your room a quick check.” As they headed for Lydia’s room, Dad asked, “Do you remember what Pastor Tom preached about last week?”

Lydia nodded. “He talked about how awful it feels to be unprepared for something important.”

“Right,” said Dad, “and especially how awful it would be not to be ready when Jesus returns.” Dad looked through the books on a shelf in Lydia’s room. “Well, I don’t see the book you’re looking for, and I’m afraid we have to get going.”

Lydia sighed and nodded. “I feel nervous and unprepared for the spelling bee, but I’m sure the funny feeling I have in my stomach can’t compare to what it must feel like to stand before God without having all your sins forgiven.”

Dad nodded. “That’s why it’s important to trust Jesus as our Savior now. When He comes back to judge the world for its sin, it will be too late.”

Lydia smiled. “Well, I may not be ready for the spelling bee today, but I trust in Jesus, so I know I’m ready for Him to come back!” – Dawn Yrene

How about you?

Have you ever been unprepared for something important? It’s not a good feeling. Some people get a knot in their stomach or feel light-headed when they realize they’re not ready. You don’t want to feel that way the day you stand before God. Nothing is as important as being prepared for that day. Don’t wait. Trust Jesus as your Savior before it’s too late.
