Today's Verse

Matthew 24:36-44 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

Dark, threatening clouds rolled overhead as the Martin family drove home from church. “In Sunday school we learned that Jesus is coming in the clouds,” five-year-old Dakota said as he intently watched the sky. “Do you think He’s coming today?”

“He could,” Mom replied.

“I’ve heard that all my life,” said Alexa. “I think preachers just say that to scare people.”

“Alexa!” Mom was interrupted by the thin, piercing wail of a siren. The wind began to blow fiercely, and large drops of rain pelted the car.

“Oh no, that’s a tornado warning!” said Alexa.

“We’re almost home,” said Dad as he peered through the blinding rain.

“Maybe Jesus is coming!” Dakota said excitedly.

“Don’t say that!” Alexa cried. “Hurry, Dad!”

“Calm down, Alexa.” Dad turned the car into the driveway. Hail began to pelt the ground as the Martins ran for the storm cellar in their backyard.

Mr. Carson, their neighbor, stood on his porch, watching the clouds. “Better come to the cellar with us,” Dad urged as they ran past him.

Mr. Carson laughed. “They blow that tornado siren every time a little cloud comes up. No need to hide in a hole in the ground.” As the cellar door closed behind the Martins, a loud roar filled the air.

About half an hour later, Dad peeked out and saw that the storm had blown past. “Our house!” exclaimed Alexa as they came out of the shelter. A corner of the roof was missing—but Mr. Carson’s entire house was gone.

“Go on in,” said Dad. “I’ll check on Mr. Carson.”

When Dad returned some time later, his face was grim. “Mr. Carson was taken to the hospital,” he said sadly. “Too bad he didn’t believe the warning!”

“What happened with Mr. Carson is a good reminder to think about whether there are any warnings we’re ignoring,” Mom said, looking at Alexa. “The Bible warns us that God will one day judge the world for its sin, and we have the chance to take shelter. Jesus took the punishment for our sin so we could be forgiven—that’s why we need to trust in Him. Jesus might not come today, but He is coming, and we need to be ready.” Barbara J. Westberg

How about you?

Do you know that the Bible says Jesus will one day come again? Instead of coming to earth as a baby, this time He will come as King and get rid of sin forever. His coming will be wonderful for those who are ready. Are you? You’re not if you haven’t trusted Jesus as your Savior. Don’t ignore the warnings. Trust Him today!
