“Mom, can we go out to eat today?” Cameron pleaded. “We haven’t gone out in a while.”

Mom sighed and gave her son a tiny smile. “Sorry, honey, we just don’t have the money for that right now.”

“Hey, did we ever use that gift card Grandma gave us last year?” Cameron asked.

“You know, I’m not sure…let me check.” Mom grabbed her purse and started rummaging through the contents. “Here it is!” Mom held up the gift card triumphantly. “Good thinking, Cameron! I forgot all about this.”

“Pastor Steve helped me think of it,” Cameron said with a grin. “In his sermon at church yesterday, he was talking about how God has given us so many good things as His children. Sometimes we forget to use what He gives us—just like a gift card that has already been paid for.”

“I like that correlation!” Mom mused. “Jesus died on the cross to save us from sin. When we trust Him as our Savior, He gives us new life and everything we need to live a life that points to Him.”

“Right,” said Cameron. “He promises to help us through everything we face in our lives now.”

Mom nodded. “I’m so thankful God never leaves us alone. He gives us His love, strength, and encouragement. What are some other things God gives us that provide us with what we need, Cameron?”

“Well, He gives us His Holy Spirit to always be with us and remind us of what we know to be true…like everything in the Bible.”

“Absolutely!” said Mom. “His Spirit teaches us and reminds us of what God’s Word says. The Bible is living and active; it tells us the truth of what Jesus has done for us and how to live as His children. When we face difficult situations, we need to remember the truth of God’s Word and rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us as we navigate through life.”

“Speaking of navigate…” Cameron gave Mom a sly smile. “I just plugged the restaurant into the navigation on your phone. Let’s use what we’ve been given!” SAVANNAH COLEMAN

How about you?

If you know Jesus as your Savior, do you take advantage of all the good things He’s given you because you’re His child? Along with forgiveness for sin and eternal life, He’s also given us everything we need to live our lives now. He gives us the Holy Spirit, who provides us with His love, His truth, and His presence. Open up His Word for encouragement and rely on the strength He offers each day.
