Lily ran into the kitchen and quietly sat down when she saw Mom on the phone. Mom smiled. “Lily just came in. You can ask her.” Mom gave Lily the phone.

“It’s Grandma.”

“Hi, Grandma!” Lily listened. “Sure, I’ll go with you. Bye.” Lily hung up. “Grandma asked me to go shopping with her for some fun fabric. She’ll be here in twenty minutes.”

In the car, Lily asked why they were buying fabric.

“This month our church’s Tabitha Team is sewing fun pillowcases for children in hospitals,” Grandma told her. “I thought it would be great if you helped me pick out what kids enjoy.”

“I’m an expert on what kids like.” Lily grinned. “Being in the hospital isn’t fun, so special pillowcases should help cheer them up. But what’s the Tabitha Team?” Lily asked.

“In the Bible, the book of Acts talks about a woman named Tabitha who was always doing good and helping the poor. She sewed clothes and other things for many people.”

“Oh, I get it,” Lily said. “Your sewing club is named after her. What else have you made?”

“We’ve sewn hats for cancer patients, teddy bears for kids, and totes for people to put on their wheelchairs or walkers, to name just a few. Every month we select a different project to help and serve others. Sometimes we sew. Other times we knit or quilt. We even bake cookies to take to shut-ins.”

“That’s a lot of doing good and helping others,” Lily said.

Grandma nodded. “We want to use the gifts God has given us to help others and show them His love.”

At the store, Lily and Grandma chose fabrics with animals, flowers, and cartoon characters. “Thanks for all your help with this, Lily,” Grandma said.

“Grandma, I can sew a little. I’d really like to help with the pillowcases for the kids. Can I call Mom and see if she’ll pick me up later so we can get started today?”

Grandma nodded and gave Lily her cell phone so she could call her mom. When she hung up, Lily had a big smile on her face. “Mom said that’s fine. I can’t wait to start working together on the pillowcase project!” • Lynda Boucher

How about you?
