The Open Umbrella
As Diego left Cole’s house to go home, Cole’s mother handed him a large paper bag. “Here are a few things
your mom can add to her garage sale tomorrow,” she said.
“Okay, thanks,” Diego replied. He took the bag and started down the street.
After walking only a short way, Diego felt something hit his face. A raindrop! Soon it began to rain harder. “Oh no!” he moaned. “I’m gonna get soaked.” He started to run, but the paper bag got wet and broke, scattering items over the ground. Diego quickly snatched everything up in his arms and ran the rest of the way home, stopping several times to pick up objects that kept slipping from his grasp. He was glad when he finally reached his house.
“Diego, you’re soaking wet!” his mom exclaimed. “And what are all those things you’re carrying?”
“Just stuff Cole’s mom sent over for the garage sale,” Diego said, dumping his wet armload onto the table. “I don’t even know what it all is. Let’s see…here’s a book, some shoes, and a—” Diego stopped short and stared at the table. There lay a perfectly good green umbrella.
Mom laughed. “You mean you carried this umbrella all the way home in the rain without even opening it?”
Diego blushed. “I didn’t even think of using it,” he said with a grin. “I just thought of it as something I had to carry.”
Diego went to his room to change into dry clothes. When he came back, Mom was staring at the umbrella thoughtfully as she wiped it with a towel. “You know,” she said, “God has used this incident to make me aware of something I haven’t been using as I should—my Bible. This umbrella has to be open to do any good, and so does my Bible. I need to read it to learn about Jesus and receive the comfort and encouragement He wants to give me through His Word. But I haven’t been opening it very often lately.”
“Yeah, me neither,” Diego admitted.
“How about reading some verses together right now?” suggested Mom.
“Sure,” said Diego, and he went to get a Bible. Sherry L. Kuyt
How about you?
Do you have a Bible? How often do you open it? Your Bible must be opened and read in order to help you. Let God speak to you through His Word. He wants to help you understand His love for you and what Jesus did to save you. He wants to comfort you in hard times and encourage you as you trust and obey Him. Take a little time each day to see what God has to say.
