The Last Mile

“Lucas, I can’t go on,” Grayson said, gasping as they plodded along the winding path in their local park. “You go on if you want. I’m holding you back. You could have finished ages ago.”
“I’m not going on without you. Come on, Grayson. Don’t give up.
We’re nearly there.”
The friends were on a sponsored walk and had only one more mile left to go. They’d been walking for hours, and many of the other walkers had passed them ages ago.
“Think of the sponsor money for the hospital,” Lucas said. “We can’t let them down, not after all the funds we’ve raised. Come on, you can do it! You’re doing well. Keep going.”
Grayson’s legs were aching. All he wanted to do was sit down on the grass for a minute, but he knew if sat down he would give up. What can I think of? he thought as he glanced at the sun shining through the trees. His mom always reminded him to ask God for help in hard times.
“Jesus, please help me and give me the strength to carry on,” he prayed.
He looked at Lucas, who was smiling at him, encouraging him. Determined, he stumbled on, knowing he would get there in the end with God’s help and Lucas’s support.
Gritting his teeth, blisters burning his feet, he hobbled on until the finish line was in sight. Both friends crossed together, receiving cheers and claps.
“Well done!” Mom said, giving Grayson a hug. “I’m so proud of you.”
“I couldn’t have done it without Lucas. I wanted to quit, but he persuaded me to keep going, and now we’ve raised funds that will help others.”
“That was very kind of you, Lucas,” Mom said. “You were a good friend today—the kind of friend Jesus is.”
Grayson nodded. “Jesus helped me get to the finish line too! When I didn’t think I could go on, I prayed, and He gave me strength.”
Mom smiled. “Jesus is always walking by our side. It doesn’t matter how difficult the path is, He is with us, encouraging us. He’ll see us through to the end.” She got out her car keys. “Now, who’s ready for some ice cream?”
Grayson and Lucas whooped, and Mom drove them home for a well-deserved treat. Cindy Lee
