Today's Verse

1 Corinthians 3:5-9 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

“Five more people were saved at the revival meeting tonight!” Regan’s father exclaimed as he walked into the house late one evening. “I’m so glad Pastor Henderson was able to be the special speaker for the week. I always thought he had a real gift for preaching.”

“Yes, and several others renewed their faith in Jesus,” Mom said happily. “Your friend’s messages are certainly touching people’s hearts this week.”

Regan didn’t say anything, but she was confused. Why are all those people listening now? she wondered. Dad preaches to these same people every week, but nobody has been saved for a long time. Now this special evangelist comes, and lots of people have trusted or renewed their faith in Jesus. It isn’t fair!

Regan’s dad could tell that something was bothering her. “You seem awfully quiet, honey. Don’t you like Pastor Henderson?”

“He’s okay, but you’re just as good as he is, Dad!” Regan replied. “Now all these people are getting right with God during the week he’s here, and he’s getting all the credit!”

“Hmm. I can see how it would seem that way,” Dad said. “Come with me. I want to show you something.” He took her out to the backyard and pointed to the sky. “Now, what’s the brightest star in the sky?”

Regan gazed upward. “That one up there is.” She pointed toward a star in the western sky. “Or…no, maybe that one way over there. I’m not sure!”

Dad smiled. “Actually, that was a trick question because you can’t see the brightest star right now. ” He chuckled as she made a face. “I’ll give you a hint: In the morning when the sun comes up, which star will be the brightest?”

“Oh! The sun is the brightest star, but you see it only during the day,” Regan replied. “It’s so bright that none of the other stars even show up then.”

“Exactly,” said Dad, “and that’s how it is with the things we do for God too. God uses all of us in different ways to bring people to Him and help them grow. Both Pastor Henderson and I are telling people about Jesus, the best and brightest of all. All the credit and praise goes to Him.” Raelene E. Phillips

How about you?

Does it seem unfair if you don’t get credit for something you’ve done to serve God? Did someone else get the credit instead? It doesn’t really matter. Remember that you serve Jesus, who gave you eternal life and helps you show His love to others. He’s the only one who deserves any praise. If something you do brings credit to Him, give thanks.
