The Boat Race
“Before you leave tomorrow, there’s one more thing you must do in Paris,” said Sophie. She was strolling along a path in the Luxembourg Gardens with her cousin, Melody. Their parents followed them, discussing the job Sophie’s dad had recently accepted in France.
“There!” said Sophie as a large basin came into view. Children surrounded it,
transfixed by small wooden sailboats meandering through the water. “Let’s race sailboats!” Sophie exclaimed.
Overhearing the idea, Sophie’s dad said, “I’ll rent a couple of boats so Melody can try it. It’s been a tradition here for over a hundred years.”
The girls chose their boats and each received a long wooden stick. “You use the stick to control your sailboat and push it in the direction you want it to go,” explained Sophie.
The girls set their boats side by side on the pond. Sophie pointed to the center of the basin where a stone statue spouted water into the air. “The first boat to reach the fountain wins,” she said. “On your mark, get set, go!”
The girls launched their boats. A breeze caught the sails, propelling the wooden vessels forward. While Melody’s boat headed toward the statue, Sophie cried out, “My boat is off course!” She ran to the other side of the basin and prodded the boat with her stick. When Sophie finally turned it around, Melody’s sailboat was already bobbing by the fountain.
“I won!” Melody yelled.
As they left the park, Sophie said, “Moving to Paris makes me feel like I’m off course—like when my sailboat floated to the wrong side of the basin.” She blinked back tears. “I’m not sure if I belong here. I miss home—and you.”
Melody put an arm around her cousin’s shoulder. “You can’t be off course because God is in control. He is your navigator, guiding you toward what’s best for you. I know it’s hard—I miss you too—but God loves you and gave his Son to save you. Trust Him to guide you.”
Sophie smiled and nodded. “I’ll pray to Jesus whenever I feel discouraged and wish I was home.”
“Good,” said Melody. “I’ll pray for you too.” • Elena Dee
