Today's Verse

2 Timothy 3:14-17 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

“What are your thoughts on these verses, Tevin?” asked Dad.

“What?” Tevin looked up with a blank expression. They were having devotions in the living room, and Tevin saw the others were watching him, waiting for an answer. “Umm…sorry, I guess I missed the last part.”

“Did you hear any of what I just read?” Dad asked.

Tevin tried to recall even a little of what his dad had read. He shook his head. “I was watching the puppies.” Their dog and her six little pups were in a box next to the couch. Tevin leaned down and picked up the smallest one. “Rusty still won’t eat,” he said, stroking the puppy’s fur.

Dad frowned. “I guess we should have left the dogs on the back porch. Leave them alone now, and after devotions we’ll see if we can get Rusty to drink from a bottle or lick a little milk from your finger.”

“He can have a piece of my candy,” Tevin’s little sister Aurora offered as Tevin put Rusty down.

“No, honey,” said Mom. “I think milk is what he needs right now.”

Dad nodded. “We all start out with milk, and later on we need to have other foods.” He paused. “I’m thinking of two very different kinds of food. Can you guess what they are?”

“Milk and meat,” Tevin guessed.

“Yeah. Ice cream and hamburgers!” said Aurora.

Dad laughed. “I’m thinking of some that are even more different than those two. Those are foods for our physical health, but we also need food for our spiritual health.” Dad held up his Bible. “This is our source for spiritual food. It tells us about Jesus and what He did to save us. As we read it and take what it says to heart, God uses it to help us grow in our faith. The truth of His Word helps us stay strong and healthy spiritually.”

Tevin was sure Dad was talking to him. “I’ll listen better,” he promised.

Dad nodded and opened the Bible. He read a few verses again. “Hey, I know these verses!” said Tevin. “Pastor Kent talked about them at church last week.” He looked at Rusty, and his eyes lit up. “Look! Rusty is eating now!”

“Not just Rusty,” said Dad. “You’re both eating now!” -Heather M. Tekavec
