Special Snowflakes
“My nose is so ugly,” moaned Bella as she glared at her reflection in the mirror. “Why do I have to be stuck with such a big nose?”
“I like your nose just fine,” said Mom. “You’re a beautiful girl.”
“Oh, you have to say that,” said Bella. “You’re my mother.”
“I think anyone would agree that you look beautiful,” Mom said. “Besides, remember that true beauty comes from our hearts. God made every person special with the potential for the beauty that comes from knowing Jesus. When we know Him, we can live in a way that shows the world how beautiful we really are!” She gave Bella a hug. “It’s character that counts.” Mom picked up a dish. “Now, I’m going to take this casserole to Mrs. Baxter—she’s not feeling very well. You can watch Mason while I’m gone.”
“Okay,” said Bella. “We can go out and make a snowman.”
Soon Bella and Mason were playing in the softly falling snow. “Oh! Look how big the snowflakes are, Mason!” said Bella.
“Let’s catch ’em!” shouted Mason. So they reached out their hands and let the snowflakes fall on their dark-colored mittens and sleeves.
“Want to see them even better?” asked Bella. “Come with me in the house for a minute.”
They dashed into the house and returned a few moments later with a magnifying glass from the science kit Bella had gotten for her birthday. She held it over the snowflakes, and they could see the beautiful shapes better than before.
“God made each one of them special,” Bella told Mason. “Did you know that in the whole world no two snowflakes have ever been found that are just alike? They’re all different from each other.”
“Mommy said there’s no one just like me in the whole world either,” Mason said smugly. He grinned at his sister. “And there’s nobody like you—God made us special too.”
Bella blinked slowly as she realized the truth in what her little brother had said. Mom’s words popped back into her mind. God made me special, she thought, and because I know Jesus, I can live in a way that shows the world how beautiful I really am! Bethany R. Elms
