Today's Verse

Ephesians 1:3, 11-14; 2 Timothy 2:13 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

“Three hundred…four hundred…five hundred,” the man counted as he placed bills on the table. “I’ll pick up the car on Thursday.”

“Dad,” Amir said after the man had left, “you sold that man our old car for only five hundred dollars? Is that all it’s worth?”

Dad shook his head. “The money he gave me isn’t the total price of the car,” he explained. “It’s a down payment. He’ll bring the rest when he gets the car.”

“But what if he changes his mind and decides not to buy it?” asked Amir.

“Then he’d lose the $500,” replied Dad, “and I’m sure he wouldn’t want to do that. A down payment is proof that a person really intends to buy something. It’s a guarantee they’re going to buy it.” Dad grinned at Amir. “Do you know God has given Christians a down payment too? The Bible calls the Holy Spirit a guarantee of the inheritance we have in Jesus.”

“So the Holy Spirit is like a down payment from God?” Amir asked.

“Right,” Dad said. “A down payment promising that we will enjoy eternal life with Jesus forever. It’s His promise that one day, when He returns and gets rid of all sin, He’ll give us bodies that won’t ever get sick or die and we’ll live with Him in a new, perfect world. And once God makes a guarantee, He won’t ever change His mind. The Bible tells us that since His down payment—the Holy Spirit—is God Himself, He will never back out of the deal. Once He saves us, we become His forever!”

“Wow!” said Amir. “But what about us? How do we hold up our end of the deal?”

“Well, when I accepted that man’s down payment, I gave up my right to own the car,” replied Dad. “And when we trust in Jesus, we give our lives over to Him. But we don’t always live up to our end of the deal—we sometimes try to take our lives back and have our own way. But God is faithful, even when we’re not. Even though we sin, He forgives us, and the Holy Spirit continues to work in our lives and make us ready for the day of our inheritance.” Sherry L. Kuyt
