Rose Serves Jesus
Rose listened intently as Mr. and Mrs. Hart, missionaries who worked in India, talked about the people in the village where they lived. “The Indian children love to sing,” said Mr. Hart. “When they hear Mrs. Hart playing her accordion, many come to Bible club.”
“The children also love the colorful pictures we use for telling Bible stories,” added Mrs. Hart. “We’re asking God to provide funds so we can take many more pictures and other visual aids back with us when we return to India in a few months.”
I wish I could help the kids in India, but there’s nothing I can do when I live so far away, Rose thought sadly.
After Sunday school, Rose attended the church service with her parents. The pastor gave a message about the apostle Paul, who traveled all over the world serving Jesus by preaching the gospel. Rose’s heart felt heavy. What could a kid like me do for Jesus? she wondered. I can’t preach or go to India. I can’t even sing very well.
When the service was over, Rose went to the coat rack at the church entrance. Before putting on her own coat, she helped Kayleigh, her little sister, with hers. Then she put on her coat, took Kayleigh’s hand, and led her out to the car.
“Go set the table, Rose,” her mom told her when they got home. “Lunch will be ready in a few minutes.” Rose quickly obeyed.
Rose was very quiet as she helped her mother clear the table after lunch. “What are you thinking about?” asked Mom.
Rose sighed. “Just that I can’t think of any way I could serve Jesus. I can’t do any of the things they talked about in church this morning.”
Mom looked surprised. “But, Rose, I see you serving Jesus all the time. I saw you serving Him this morning when you helped your little sister. When you obey me, you’re serving Jesus here at home. Last week you invited Payton to Bible club so she could learn more about Him. You’re already serving Him in many ways.”
Rose’s face brightened. “Is that really serving Jesus?”
“Of course it is!” Mom replied. “When you serve others out of love and gratitude for all Jesus has done for you, you’re serving Him.” CAROLYN E. YOST
How about you?
Do you think about serving Jesus some day in the future? Don’t wait till then. You don’t have to be an adult to serve Jesus. You can serve Him by obeying what He says in the Bible, helping others, being kind, inviting friends to church, telling others about Him, being respectful to your parents…the list could go on and on. Serve the Lord today!
