Remember “Y”
“Whew! This is hard work!” Hunter stopped to wipe sweat off his forehead after tossing a log onto the back of the trailer.
“Just imagine how much work this would be without you two helping me!” Dad said with a grin.
Wynter giggled. “You would be lost without us, Dad!”
“And you both would be cold without all this wood, now that I’ve got that wood furnace installed.”
“I bet you wish you were cold right now!” Mom said, showing up with a pitcher of fresh lemonade.
“I’m always cold,” Wynter quipped.
“Any more trees you want me to take down while we have this great weather?” Dad asked Mom as he sipped some lemonade.
“What about that Y tree that was bothering you?” Hunter asked, referring to a tree shaped like a “Y” that Mom had said needed to be cut down.
Mom shook her head. “Actually, no. I think we should keep that tree.”
Hunter swallowed a gulp of his drink in surprise. “Why? You said it’s the only tree in the back that looks out of place.”
“It does, but after having my time with God the other day, I’ve had a change of heart. You kids know how I’ve been reading about the different names of God in the Bible? I just started reading about the name ‘Yahweh.’ It was the people of Israel’s most personal name for God. Can you believe it’s mentioned over six thousand times in the Old Testament? Anyway, this name helped the children of Israel remember that God is the ruler over everything and that He saved them from slavery in Egypt. God told Moses to tell the Israelites that this was to be His name forever—one that would be remembered from generation to generation.”
“Oh! So you want to keep the Y tree so that when we see it, we will remember Yahweh?” Hunter questioned.
“You got it!” Mom smiled. “It will remind us that just like God saved the Israelites from slavery, He sent Jesus, His Son, to save us from being slaves to sin.”
“I guess we’re keeping the tree!” Wynter clapped her hands. “Whenever we look at it, it will remind us WHY we trust in Jesus!” • Savannah Coleman
How about you?
Did you know there are lots of different names used for God in the Bible? He has so many wonderful names that tell us about who He is and the marvelous things He has done. One of the names most often used in the Bible, Yahweh (often translated into English as “the Lord”), tells us of His immeasurable greatness and His faithfulness to us. Whenever you see a name for God in the Bible, think about what it means and what it tells us about Him.
