Today's Verse

Genesis 1:1-5; Psalm 33:6-9; Ephesians 2:10 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

“You know what, Dad? In science class today, Haley told me she believes the universe started on its own…that it just kind of happened,” said Abigail. “I know that’s not what the Bible teaches, but I don’t think she cares what the Bible says. How can I explain to her why I believe God created everything?”

Dad thought a bit, then handed Abigail a flyer—a bicycle advertisement that had come in the mail. “Cut out all the words and pictures in this ad,” he said.

Abigail rolled her eyes. Dad often gave her some project to do instead of answering her question. She got scissors and began cutting.

“Now toss those words and pictures into the air,” said Dad. Abigail frowned but did as he said. “Good,” Dad said when the pieces landed on the floor. “How does that ad look now? Does it make you want to buy a bike?”

“Oh, Dad! Half of those pieces aren’t even right side up! They’re just wherever they happened to fall. I’d need to take time to arrange them to make them say something.”

Dad nodded. “An ad takes planning and work. Now, think about our world—trees, lakes, mountains, sky, sun and stars, the air we breathe. And think about animals and people—intricate systems of veins, pores, internal organs, bones. Could any of that just happen by chance without being planned?”

“No,” Abigail said. She smiled and motioned toward the words on the floor. “Hey! I could try something like this with Haley, couldn’t I?”

“It might help her see that a finished product of anything doesn’t just happen. Ads have to be planned, and the universe did too. God designed each part of it with great love and care.” Dad smiled at Abigail. “But the best part of all is that God loves and cares for us! When the beautiful world He created for us became broken because of our sin, He planned a way for us to be saved through His Son, Jesus. That’s the most important thing for Haley to understand—that Jesus loves her so much He died for her. So be sure to explain your views in a kind, compassionate way like Jesus would.”

“Okay,” Abigail said. “I’ll try to help her understand God’s best plan of all!”

How about you?

Has someone told you the universe just happened—that people exist by accident? That doesn’t really make sense, does it? Things like our world don’t just happen—they need to be planned. The Bible says God designed and created everything—and that includes you. He made a way for you to be saved from sin and have eternal life with Him. Thank Him for His perfect plan and for the love He has for you.
