Not Defined by Frogs
“Look at this one, Adri!”
Adriana looked at the bright green bullfrog in her twin brother’s hands. She shrugged. “It’s all right. But I can find a bigger one.” She spun around and marched into the deeper part of the swamp.
“Better not go too far or your boots will get stuck,” Alan called after her.
Adriana waved her hand. “I’ll be fine.” Wading deeper and deeper, her boots filled with water, but she didn’t care. She was determined. Then she saw a giant frog swim under a cluster of duckweed. She smiled and inched closer, hands ready. Just one more step. She leaned forward only to find her boot wasn’t following. She pulled harder, but the mud had firmly enclosed around it, sealing it in place like cement. Her eyes darted back to the duckweed to see the frog swim off. She hit the water with her hand. “No!”
Alan crossed his arms. “You’re stuck, aren’t you? I told you not to go that deep.” He tilted his head with an expression of I-told-you-so.
“It’s not fair!” Adri yelled. “Everything is easy for you! Nothing I do is ever good enough!” Tears snuck out of her eyes and trickled down her cheeks.
Alan’s eyebrows rose in shock. Slowly, he waded to her side and placed a hand on her arm. “That’s not true, Adri. Lots of times I wish I could be more like you. You’re the nicest person I know.”
Adri wiped her tears. “Really?”
Alan nodded. “Just because we’re twins doesn’t mean we’re going to be the same. It’s like Abuela says—‘God made us, and He doesn’t make mistakes.’ God made us to be different, and He’s working in both of our lives. What we do doesn’t define us—Jesus does.”
A small smile brightened Adri’s face. “I guess you’re right.”
Bending over, Alan tried to pry up her boot. “It won’t budge. We’ll have to leave it behind.”
With only one boot, Adri trudged behind her brother toward the house. Suddenly, she stopped. Her hands darted into the water, pulling out the giant frog. She looked to see if Alan had noticed. He didn’t. She could have called out to him, but it didn’t seem to matter anymore. Smiling, she tossed the frog back into the water. CATIE CORDERO
How about you?
Have you ever felt like you’re not good enough? God specifically created you to be the person He wanted you to be. He loves the person you are—so much that He sent His Son, Jesus, to die for you. Nothing you do or don’t do will change God’s mind about you. You will always be His special child, whom He loves.
