Me Too
“Hi, Grandpa,” Eric said as he entered his grandfather’s apartment, which was a few doors down from where he and his mom and sister lived. “I brought you some of Mom’s cinnamon rolls. She made them this morning.”
“Great!” Grandpa said. “Let’s have one.” As they sat down at the kitchen table, there was a knock at the door. “More company?” Grandpa asked.
“Elia!” Eric said when Grandpa opened the door. “What are you doing here? Mom is going to be mad at you! She sent me to bring Grandpa these rolls. Does she know where you are?”
“Me too!” said Elia. “Mommy said I could come too.”
Eric frowned and turned to Grandpa. “Elia thinks she has to go everywhere I go and do everything I do.”
“That’s because she looks up to you,” Grandpa told him. “You’re her example. Where you lead, she follows.”
Eric sighed. “I guess she does look up to me, and she follows me like a shadow. She copies everything I do.”
Grandpa smiled. “That’s actually a good reminder for how we need to live as Christians. Just like Elia follows you in so many little ways because you’re her example, we need to follow Jesus. He’s our Savior, and He makes us more like Him by helping us follow His example in our lives.”
“Me too!” announced Elia.
Eric and Grandpa laughed. “Yes, Elia, you should follow Jesus too,” Grandpa said. “And since Eric and I are having a cinnamon roll, I think you’d better have one too.” He stuck a fork into one of the gooey rolls and put it on a plate.
“I love Mom’s rolls,” Eric said as he wiped his mouth with a napkin.
“Me too!” Elia said, wiping her mouth as her brother had done.
Eric rolled his eyes. “Come on, little Me Too. Let’s get home. Bye, Grandpa.”
“Bye!” Grandpa said. “And Eric, remember that you can be a great example to your sister and others by trusting Jesus to help you follow His example.”
Eric glanced at Elia as she thrust her hand into his and trotted along beside him. He hadn’t thought about the responsibility he had to be a good example. Jesus, help me look to You and follow You as my example, he prayed. And help Elia follow you someday too. – Barbara J. Westberg
How about you?
Is there someone in your life who looks up to you? Having to be a good example to others is a big responsibility. That’s why it’s important to follow Jesus’ example in everything you do. You can help others know who He is and what He’s done for them by showing them the kind of love He’s shown you. Follow Him as your example so you can point others to Him.
