“Look, Aunt Bonnie,” whispered Lanie. “There are deer by the creek!”

Lanie and her aunt stopped and watched as a mother deer and her fawn drank from the clear stream that followed the mountain trail. The two hikers stood still and quiet, not wanting to disturb the beautiful animals.

Finally, the little family had their fill. The mother deer and her baby stepped gingerly across the rocky stream and bounded up the treed slope.

“Wow!” exclaimed Aunt Bonnie. “Seeing those deer reminds me of one of my favorite verses.”

“Which verse is that?” asked Lanie.

“Psalm 42:1—‘As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.’”

“Our souls drink water?” Lanie pulled her water bottle from her day pack and took a swig.

Aunt Bonnie took a drink from her own bottle before answering. “Our souls need the living water that only Jesus can provide.”

“What is living water?”

“Do you know how it feels to be real thirsty on a hot day, after playing a game of volleyball or running a race?” asked Aunt Bonnie.

“Or hiking in the woods?” Lanie grinned. “I sure do!”

Aunt Bonnie sat down on a log and wiped her forehead with her bandana. “God created our bodies to need water throughout the day, but we also need His living water throughout the day—every day for eternity!”

“How do we get God’s living water?” Lanie wanted to know.

“Living water comes from God’s Son, Jesus,” explained Aunt Bonnie. “Jesus died on the cross and rose again to save us, and if you trust Him to forgive you for your sins—all the wrong things you’ve done—then the living water is yours forever!”

“What about the people who don’t believe Jesus saved us?” asked Lanie.

Aunt Bonnie had a sad look on her face. “Then I’m afraid they will stay thirsty. That’s why it’s important to tell others about Jesus!”

“When we get back home,” said Lanie, “I’m going to tell everyone about this hike, the deer, and Jesus’s living water!”
