Like a Diamond
Callie snuggled up to her big sister as they finished watching their movie. “Nicole, I’m so happy you came to visit! I’ve really missed you!”
Nicole smiled at her sister. “I like college, but there’s nothing more special than coming home to see you!” Nicole’s engagement ring sparkled in the light as she picked up the empty popcorn bucket.
“Could I try your ring on one more time, Nicole?” Callie begged. “It’s just so shimmery!”
Nicole handed her ring to Callie. “Do you know why the diamond is so shiny?”
Callie wrinkled her nose in concentration. “It’s multi-something…we learned about it in school.”
“Multifaceted. The diamond has tons of tiny cuts all over it so the light can catch each portion. This makes the diamond shine even brighter when the light hits it.”
An hour later, Nicole tucked her sister into bed. “All right, Cal-Cal, do you want to pray tonight, or should I?”
“You!”
Nicole began praying. “Dear God—”
“Wait!” Callie interrupted loudly.
Nicole’s eyes flew open. “Goodness, Callie, you startled me! What is it?”
“I was just thinking about something. Doesn’t God have a whole bunch of names? You know, other than Jesus?”
Nicole nodded. “Absolutely.”
“Well, why do we just say ‘God’ or ‘Jesus’ most of the time? It seems to me that God is like your diamond—multifaceted. He is Creator, King, Savior, our Good Shepherd…what other names can you remember?”
“Alpha and Omega—that means God is the beginning and the end—the Word, our Prince of Peace, I Am… there are so many more. Callie, you’re right! God is just like a diamond! There are many wonderful names of God that reflect His multifaceted character. I never thought of it that way before.” Nicole gazed at her diamond ring.
“You know what I think we should do this week, Nicole? Every time we pray, we should use one of the names of God we don’t normally use.”
“Great idea, sis! That will help us reflect on His wonderful character. I’ll start now. Dear God—I mean, Dear Everlasting Father…”

How about you?
Did you know that God has many names? Like cuts on a diamond, each name mentioned in the Bible helps make His true character sparkle. He is like no other; He is both loving and just, full of peace and brave as a roaring lion. When you pray, try using some of the names for God you don’t normally use (check out Isaiah 9:6 and John 14:6 for a few to start with). Think about what each name reveals about God’s character.
