Light of the Son (Part 1)
At church, Kamaria recited her Bible verse for her teacher. “Isaiah 43:1—‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine.’”
“Good.” Mrs. Wallace smiled as Kamaria sat down, then turned to the rest of the class. “Since our verse this week says God calls us by our names, I thought it might be fun to look up the meanings of the names our parents gave us,” she said, holding up her phone.
Kamaria raised her hand. “Will you be able to look up my name?” she asked doubtfully. “It’s an African name, you know.”
“Yes, and it’s a pretty one,” said Mrs. Wallace. “I’m sure we’ll be able to find out more about your name online. In fact, why don’t we start with your name right now?” Kamaria eagerly nodded.
Mrs. Wallace tapped the screen of her phone. “Here it is,” she said after a moment. She handed the phone to Kamaria. “Would you like to read it for us?”
Kamaria took the phone and read, “Kamaria means ‘like the moon.’”
“And what does the moon do?” ask Mrs. Wallace.
Lauren quickly raised her hand. “It gives light at night.”
“That’s right,” said Mrs. Wallace, “and where does the moon get its light?”
A chorus of voices answered, “From the sun!”
“Right. Now let’s read John 8:12 and find the source of a Christian’s light. Carter, will you read it for us, please?”
Quickly finding the verse, Carter read, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”
“So Christians get their light from Jesus,” Kamaria said.
“Yes,” said Mrs. Wallace. “He shines His light on those who know Him as their Savior, and we reflect it to others—just like the moon reflects the sun’s light. As our verse for this week says, we don’t have to be afraid when the world seems like a very dark place. We know Jesus died and rose again to save us, and He has called us each by name to shine His light in the darkness.” Phyllis M. Robinson
How about you?
Are you walking in light or in darkness? Jesus refers to Himself as the Light of the World. Do you know Him? If you do, you’re walking in His light and reflecting His love to those around you. If you don’t know Him, you are walking in darkness. Jesus loves you and knows you by name. Walk in His light by trusting in Him.
