Today's Verse

Psalm 119:105-112 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

“Hey, Dad,” Miles said when they finished putting up their tent at the campsite in the woods, “we need to get a fire started. It’s getting dark!”

Dad agreed. “Grab a flashlight, and we’ll go find some firewood.”

Miles rummaged through his backpack and found his flashlight. He turned it on and pointed it toward the trees, but the light was very dim. “My batteries must be wearing out.” He pointed the flashlight at the ground and could see just a couple of steps ahead. “But at least it works a little.”

Dad and Miles walked along carefully picking up sticks. “I can’t believe how fast it got dark!” Miles said. “It’s pitch black already! Good thing I have my flashlight, even if it is dim. We would’ve had a terrible time without it.”

“You’re right about that,” Dad said. “Okay, let’s get back to camp.”

At camp, Dad stacked sticks in the campfire ring while Miles crumpled old newspapers. Together they added little twigs on top. “I can’t stop thinking about baseball tryouts,” Miles said as they worked. “I just don’t know if I want to play next summer. I’ve thought and prayed about it, but I just don’t know.”

“That is tough,” Dad replied. “But remember that Psalm 119 says God’s Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Kind of like your flashlight.”

Miles laughed. “My light was a dud!”

“Maybe, maybe not. It didn’t look so great when you shined it out into the distance, but when you shined it straight down…”

“It worked!”

“Exactly,” said Dad. “When we’re looking for direction, we can go to Jesus in prayer, and we can study His Word. It will be a lamp to our feet—not our heads.”

“Oh, I get it,” Miles said. “You mean God only shows us a little at a time.”

“Yep,” said Dad. “Lots of times we want to know things way ahead of God’s schedule. While planning is good, Jesus wants us to trust Him and wait for Him to show us His will at the right time.”

Miles grinned. “I think I can handle that!” – Lisa Cowman

How about you?

Do you struggle with knowing what choices to make? Do you wonder what activities you should do at school? Or what you should be when you grow up? Some choices are easy; others are tough to decide. But for many choices, you don’t need answers today. Talk to Jesus and study His Word to see what He says about situations you face right now. Then trust Him to help you make good decisions in the future.
