Today's Verse

Colossians 3:17, 23-24 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

“Mom!” Maria found her mom going through a box of old papers. “Jenna wants to ride bikes in the park this afternoon. Can I go?”

“You have drama practice today,” Mom replied. “Your team is doing a skit in the program at church this week, remember?”

“It won’t hurt if I miss practice,” Maria said. “It wouldn’t even matter if I missed the whole program. I’ve only got a couple lines. Can’t I go with Jenna? Please?”

Mom took a piece of paper out of the box and laughed. “Maria, look at this!” Maria reluctantly walked over. “I’m going through some of Grandma’s old things,” Mom said. “I remember her telling me about this thank-you note she wrote to her aunt when she was a kid.” Mom handed Maria the note so she could read it.

“‘Thank ou for the cand. It was reall umm and I enjoed it ver much.’” Maria gave her mom a confused look. “This doesn’t make any sense.”

“Grandma’s aunt had sent her some candy, and Grandma used a typewriter to write her a thank-you note,” said Mom.

“That’s what people used to type with before computers, right?” Maria asked.

Mom laughed. “Right. There was just one problem—the y on the typewriter didn’t work.”

Maria looked at the note again. “Oh, I get it! The y’s are missing. Grandma was trying to say, ‘Thank you for the candy. It was really yummy and I enjoyed it very much.”

“That little y turned out to be pretty important, huh?” said Mom. “Grandma realized that too. She decided to send a handwritten note instead to be sure her aunt understood the message. But she kept the typed copy as a reminder of how important one little letter can be.” Mom looked at Maria. “I think you need to be reminded of that too.”

“Me?” Maria frowned. “You’re talking about drama practice, aren’t you?”

Mom nodded. “Every letter in Grandma’s note was needed to communicate the message clearly. And every part in the skit at church is needed to help people understand its message. Jesus gives us different parts to play in helping communicate the gospel to others. Each one is important, even if it seems small.”

Maria looked down at the note in her hand. “Okay, Mom. I’ll go to practice.” – Margaret M. Primrose

How about you?

Do the things you do to serve Jesus seem like they don’t matter very much? It may seem like that sometimes, but what you do is important. Jesus has a great message of salvation for the world, and He wants every Christian to help communicate it. Do your part—whether it’s serving in your local church, showing kindness to everyone around you, or simply living your everyday life—to share the message of God’s love with others.
