Today's Verse

2 Corinthians 1:3-7 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

Harper’s back at school today, Emma noticed. Maybe her mom is doing better. But a few minutes later, Emma learned that Harper’s mother remained in critical condition after being in a serious car accident a week before. Many of their classmates stared curiously at Harper and avoided speaking to her. A few of them awkwardly attempted to comfort her. At least they’re trying, Emma thought. But since Dad was in a bad car accident last year, I think I know just how Harper feels. Maybe it would help her if I tell her about Dad’s accident.

Emma walked over to Harper. “You doing okay?” she asked.

Harper shrugged. “Dad thought it would get my mind off Mom’s accident if I came to school, but it’s not really working.”

“It’s hard, I know,” said Emma. “My dad was badly hurt in a car wreck last year.”

“Oh.” Harper sighed. “Then you know how I feel!”

Emma nodded. “I was so scared, but I knew lots of people were praying for him, and that helped me. Would…would you like me to pray for your mom?”

“Really?” Harper tried to smile. “I don’t think anyone ever prayed for us before.”

“I’ll pray for your whole family,” Emma assured her. “Would you like to pray together now?”

“I don’t know much about praying,” said Harper.

“That’s okay,” Emma said. “I’ll pray. Then maybe I can tell you more about how Jesus helped our family through that tough time.”

Harper nodded and followed Emma’s example as she closed her eyes and bowed

her head.

When Emma got home from school that day, she told her mom about Harper’s mother. “I told Harper how knowing Jesus helped me when Dad had that accident. She listened to what I said because she knew I understood how she felt.” Emma smiled. “It’s almost like God used Dad’s accident to help me know what to say to Harper.”

“Yes,” said Mom. “That’s what the Bible says. Jesus comforts us during hard times, and He tells us to comfort others when they go through hard times too. One way we can do that is by telling hurting people how Jesus helped us like you did. Let’s pray it will encourage Harper to trust Him.”

Emma nodded. “Let’s pray for her right now.”

How about you?

Have you experienced difficult things? Maybe there’s been a serious illness, a death, or an especially hard time in your family. Jesus cares and offers His comfort—through His Word, through talking with Him, and sometimes through other people. You, in turn, can comfort others. Pray for those who are going through a tough situation. Trust God to help you reach out to them and tell them about His love.
