Today's Verse

Psalm 27:1-6 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

As Josie headed home after school, she dreaded going into the empty house. She thought about what her teacher had told her class earlier that day. “There are millions of kids who are home without adults for some time each day,” Mrs. Richards had said. “Many of them are scared but don’t want to admit it. However, feeling afraid when you’re home alone is nothing to be ashamed of. If you’re in this situation, don’t hesitate to talk to your parents or another adult.”

Josie sighed as she unlocked the door to her house. That was exactly how she felt when she was alone for an hour each day after school, and knowing there were lots of other kids in the same situation didn’t make her feel any less lonely or afraid.

She threw her backpack on the table and tried to ignore the empty house. I’m twelve years old, she thought. I should be able to be at home by myself without jumping at every little noise! She turned on the TV and set the volume low, then took out her homework. I guess I should tell someone I’m scared.

So as Josie helped her mom with dinner that evening, she told her what Mrs. Richards had said.

“Oh, honey, I didn’t realize being home alone bothered you,” said Mom. “I’m so sorry I can’t get home before you do. But you know you can call me anytime. Why don’t you call me every day when you get home?”

Josie brightened. “I’d like that.”

Mom hung up the dish towel and gave Josie a hug. “There’s someone else you can call on every day too,” she said.

“There is?” Josie asked eagerly. “Who?”

“Jesus,” Mom replied. “I love you very much, but Jesus loves you even more. He promises to be with you and take care of you, and He’s right here when you feel lonely and frightened. You can talk to Him about your fears.”

The next day when Josie got home from school, she said a prayer before calling her mom. Thank you for being with me, Jesus. Please help me remember you’re always with me so I don’t feel so alone and afraid. Linda M. Weddle

How about you?

Do you have to be home alone sometimes? Does it make you feel afraid? Talk to your parents or another adult about how you feel. They may be able to suggest some things you can do that will help you feel less lonely until they get home again. Talk to Jesus about it too. He loves you and is always with you. He can help you be courageous and unafraid.
