Today's Verse

Joshua 7:1, 19-26 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

“Is your room clean?” Mom raced past Beth’s room, her arms full of laundry and her tone a bit higher pitched than usual. “We need to leave as soon as you’re done. The movie won’t wait for us.”

Beth shoved one more sock under her dresser. “Done!” She burst from her room like an exhausted marathon runner. Before Mom could ask any questions, she raced for the hall closet. “Just need to vacuum.”

Even though her floor wasn’t completely clear, Beth knew the sound of the vacuum would convince Mom she’d thoroughly cleaned her room. She zipped over the floor in record time until KWOOPH—the vacuum clogged. She didn’t see what she’d hit, but the smell of burnt rubber left no doubt of her goof.

“What’s that smell? Did you run over something?” Mom rushed in to inspect the vacuum. Sure enough, hanging out of the bottom was a dirty sock. “A sock? Really? I thought you said your room was clean!”

Mom peeked under the dresser. “Beth! This is packed with junk!” She pulled out a sock, a brush, a necklace, an old purse, and a few broken crayons. “What a mess!”

Mom opened the closet. The huge pile of clothes Beth had so carefully crammed in the corner tumbled out. “Do you have anything to say?”

Beth whispered, “I’m sorry.”

Mom sighed. “I’m sorry we’re going to miss the movie, but I told you we couldn’t go unless your room was clean, and you tried to deceive me. You have to learn that covering up your sins won’t help you. When you get older, you may be tempted to think you can break the rules without any consequences. You can’t. Your sin will always find you out.”

“Yeah, like my sock gave me away.”

Mom laughed. “That sock can be a great blessing if you let the lesson sink into your heart. Hidden sin will always come to light.” She hugged Beth. “The good news is that Jesus took the punishment for our sin. He forgives us when we confess our sins to Him and can turn any bad thing into something good. So, let’s turn on some music and have some fun while we get this room cleaned up!” – Rebekah Love Dorris

How about you?

Have you ever tried to hide your sins so you could break the rules and still have a good time? It doesn’t work. Even if you think you got away with it, sin always comes to light. When you confess your sins to Jesus, He will forgive you and help you turn away from them, so don’t delay! Turn to Jesus and enjoy His mercy today.
