God’s Love Never Fades
Nick’s mom sighed after she got off the phone. “That was the police. They just informed me that Grandpa walked out of a store without paying for his stuff.”
“Oh no!” exclaimed Nick. “Is he in big trouble?”
“Grandpa didn’t mean to steal—he just forgot to pay,” replied Mom.
Nick looked worried. “On Friday Grandpa forgot where he put his keys and spent the whole day looking for them. Today he didn’t pay for his stuff and ended up at the police station. What’s going on with him, Mom?”
“The police suspect Grandpa has dementia,” Mom said. “The store has decided to drop charges against him.”
“Phew!” said Nick in relief. “But what is dementia?”
“It’s a condition that causes loss of memory and thinking ability,” Mom explained. “It’s more common among the elderly.”
“Wait a minute,” said Nick. “I think my classmate Isaac mentioned that his grandma has dementia. He was complaining that she didn’t recognize him the other day.”
“That must be hard for Isaac,” said Mom. “But sometimes just being there means a lot. His grandma might not remember him, but I’m sure she can still feel his love for her.”
Nick felt tears come to his eyes. “I don’t want Grandpa to forget us.”
“I don’t either,” said Mom. “We will do our best to help and support Grandpa. I heard that some mental activities like playing chess and other board games can help slow down memory loss.”
“Chess? I like chess! I can definitely play with Grandpa,” Nick said with a smile.
“That’s good! I’m sure Grandpa would be happy to play with you. But even if Grandpa’s memory continues to get worse and he forgets us one day, remember that God will never forget him. Jesus knows what Grandpa is going through, and He won’t ever abandon him. His love never fades.”
As they got in the car, Nick asked, “Can we pray and ask God to make Grandpa better?”
“Yes, let’s do that on the way to the police station,” said Mom. “But even if He doesn’t make Grandpa better now, we know Jesus will give him a new body one day that will never get old or sick. Let’s remember that as we help Grandpa and remind him of God’s love.”

How about you?
Do you know anyone who has dementia? It’s hard to think about loved ones losing their memory and maybe not even remembering us. But don’t be discouraged. Even though their memory may fade, God’s love for them never will. You can help remind them of His love by being there for them and praying for them. If they trust in Jesus, He will never forget or abandon them.
