Today's Verse

Psalm 33:6-9 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

“What are you doing, Mom?” asked Avery when she arrived home from school. She looked around the kitchen. “Wow! Where did all the flowers come from?” There were several very large bouquets on the table and counters.

“Your dad brought these home from the church this afternoon. He had a funeral, and the family asked if he would take these flowers and see that they go to some shut-ins,” Mom replied. “I’m arranging these huge bouquets into smaller ones for them. Want to help?”

“Sure,” said Avery. “There are so many of them! You need help—unless you think they might arrange themselves.” She giggled. “You know—jump out of the big bouquets and divide themselves into smaller ones.”

Mom laughed. “Whatever made you think of such a thing?” she asked.

“Well, if the world just came together by chance, like some people believe, it seems like these bouquets could do that too,” said Avery.

“I see,” said Mom, “but we both know the world didn’t just come into being on its own. It took someone—God—to make it, and He continues to oversee everything that happens in it.”

“I know,” said Avery. “We had a lesson on creation in our class at church last week. Mrs. Platt put a jug of water and a package of lemonade mix on the table. She asked us to guess how long it would take for those things to become lemonade if we just left them there. She said whoever made the best guess could have the lemonade.”

“What was your guess?” asked Mom.

“We all agreed they would never become lemonade, no matter how long they were left there. Someone would have to stir the ingredients together,” said Avery. “So Mrs. Platt let us do that, and she said we all won, so we all got a cup of lemonade.”

“Mrs. Platt was right,” said Mom. “God created everything there is, and His hand guides every process that happens in the whole universe. Without Him, there would be nothing.”

“Right,” said Avery. “Not only would the water and lemonade mix not be able to stir themselves together—they wouldn’t even exist!” Shirley Dechaine

How about you?

Have you heard that the world just happened to come together on its own? That would be just like lemonade mix jumping into water and stirring itself around! Lemonade can’t make itself—it needs a hand to stir it. And the universe needs a Creator. God created the universe from nothing, and He guides everything that happens in it. So make yourself some lemonade and go enjoy His awesome creation.
