Today's Verse

Ephesians 5:8-10; Philippians 2:14-16 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

“Hey, Carla! I need your help!” Ava called to her older sister.

“For what?” Carla walked to Ava’s open door and saw her sister on a ladder in the middle of her room.

“Will you come and help me put these glow-in-the-dark stars on my ceiling?” Ava asked.

“I can’t. I’m helping Mrs. Samara teach the kindergarten class at church this week, and I need to think of an illustration that will help the kids understand a truth found in the Bible. I haven’t gotten very far.”

“I’ll help you with that if you help me with this,” Ava said. “Please?”

“Well, okay.” Carla went in and joined her sister.

The girls had fun peeling the backs off the stars, climbing on the stepladder, and sticking the stars on the ceiling, one by one. They chatted together as they worked. “My friend Madison has the same kind of stars on the ceiling in her room,” Ava said. “They are so cool! I wonder what makes them glow.”

“I don’t know exactly,” Carla replied. “All I know is they’re made of material that absorbs light—like when there’s daylight or you have the light on in your room. Then when you turn off your light, they shine all by themselves!”

“Let’s give them a try,” Ava said as she smoothed the last one onto the ceiling. Carla nodded, and the girls pulled down the shades, shut the door, and turned off the light. “Ooh!” Ava said. “They’re so pretty!”

“Worth the work!” said Carla. “And now I have to go finish my lesson.”

“I’ll come help you like I promised,” Ava said.

Carla smiled. “Actually, I think you already did. I know what illustration I can use to teach the kids at church. Your stars! They can’t glow in the dark unless they absorb light, and as Christians, Jesus is our light. He shines on us so we can glow in the darkness of this world and lead others to Him.”

“Hey, that’s a great illustration!” Ava said. “Glad I could help!”

How about you?

Do you own something that glows in the dark? It’s fun to see things like that, isn’t it? Did you know that if you’re a Christian, you also glow in the dark? Because you know Jesus, you’re a light in a world that’s dark with sin. He shines His light on you so you can be a light to people who don’t know Him.
