Found Treasure

“This ground sure is stony, thought Lincoln, bending over to pick up a stone he had uncovered while hoeing the garden. “Grandpa,” he called after wiping dirt from the stone. “Look what I found.” Lincoln handed the stone to his grandfather. “I never saw a stone this shape. Do you think it might be an arrowhead?”
“I don’t know,” said Grandpa, studying the pointed stone. “This does look a lot like an arrowhead, doesn’t it? It would be very unusual to find one these days, but we should show it to someone who knows more about them.”
“Cool! We talked about arrowheads in history class,” said Lincoln. “Native Americans used them to hunt game.”
“Yes,” said Grandpa, “and that was many years ago. Just think, if this is an arrowhead, it was hidden in the ground for a long time—possibly hundreds of years.” He handed the stone back to Lincoln.
“I like it,” said Lincoln as he put it into his pocket. “I’ll keep it even if it isn’t an arrowhead. And I’ll keep digging. Maybe I’ll find more treasure.” But he didn’t uncover any other interesting stones that afternoon.
After supper, Grandpa reached for his Bible. “Let’s read from the book of Acts tonight,” he said. He opened the Bible and read a few verses. “You know, this reminds me of the stone you dug up in the garden today, Lincoln,” Grandpa said when he finished reading.
“It does?” asked Lincoln. “Why is that? It didn’t say anything about gardens.”
“No, but I’ve dug in that garden many times and never found any stone like the one you dug up,” said Grandpa. “I’ve also dug into God’s Word many times. That’s where you can find real treasure—and I’m still working to find all the valuable things it contains. The verses we just read talk about people who searched the Scriptures daily, and that’s what we should do too. The Bible helps us understand who Jesus is and all that He’s done for us, and it also contains wisdom and promises that guide us and encourage us as we live for Him. We’ll miss a great deal if we don’t keep reading and searching it every day.” – Lois A. Witmer
