Follow the Right Map
Henry’s family was going on vacation, and his job was to clean out the car to get it ready for the trip. As he was rummaging around for trash, he found a stack of old maps stuffed in the driver’s-side door. Curiosity got the best of him, so Henry spread them out on the driveway to get a better look.
“Hey, son! What have you got there?” Dad asked.
“Oh, I found these old maps in the car, so I wanted to see what they were.”
Dad sat on the driveway beside Henry. “This one is a map to the beach cottage we went to last year. And I used that map to find my way to a conference several years ago.” Dad chuckled. “This one is a map to the mountain cottage where your mom and I celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary. I remember it got us almost there.”
“What do you mean, ‘almost,’” asked Henry.
Dad laughed. “Well, we followed it to a little town at the edge of the mountain, but then the road the map said to take didn’t exist! I had to ask directions from somebody in town, and we ended up having to backtrack for an hour before we found the right road up the mountain to our cottage!”
Henry looked skeptically at all the maps spread out on the driveway. “How do you know which of these are right and which of these will get you lost?” he asked.
Dad grinned. “I guess you don’t know until you start to follow one. But I do know of one guide that will lead you the right way every single time!”
“Do you have that map in the car?” Henry asked.
“It’s right here.” Dad got up and pulled a small Bible from the glove compartment. “The Bible is our guidebook for life. It always points us in the right direction by giving us God’s wisdom and truth. It also tells us how to get to our final destination—the kingdom of heaven—by trusting Jesus as our Savior. The Bible is the best life map to follow.” Kendra Angle
