Today's Verse

John 14:21-24 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

“Don’t do that, Timber!” exclaimed Silas as he wiped his cheek. “You’re getting me all wet!”

“He’s giving you doggy kisses,” said Mom with a smile.

Silas’ brother, Lance, laughed. “Let me have him, Silas. I want some doggy kisses too!”

In the weeks that followed, the boys enjoyed their new puppy. They played with him and trained him to obey them. He learned fast and soon knew several tricks.

“Watch this, Mom,” Silas called as he threw a squeaky toy. Timber was off in a flash to fetch and return it. Silas held out his hand for the toy, but Timber hung on to it. “Drop it,” ordered Silas, and the puppy released the toy. Silas threw it again, and Timber bounded away to retrieve it.

Silas looked at Mom. “See how well he obeys? That shows he loves us,” he said as the puppy brought back the ball and dropped it at his feet. Silas laughed when Timber started giving him more doggy kisses.

When it was time to feed the puppy, Lance filled his dish. “Okay, Timber, take your food,” he said.

Timber made a flying dash for the dog dish and began to eat. He paused to see if the boys were still there, then quickly devoured his food.

When Timber finished eating, he ran to Silas and licked his hand. Then he ran to Lance and gave him the same treatment. Lance laughed. “This is his way of saying thank you and telling us that he loves us.”

Mom nodded. “There’s another way Timber shows that he loves you,” she said. “Silas, you mentioned it before.”

“I did?” Silas paused, thinking. He recalled their earlier conversation. “Oh, I remember. I said he shows that he loves us by listening and obeying when we tell him to do something.”

“That’s it,” said Mom. “Timber is a good example for us. He loves us because of all we do for him and shows how he feels by giving doggy kisses and by obeying. As Christians, both our mouths and our actions should show our love for Jesus. He’s done so much for us, and we need to say we love Him as well as show it as we obey Him.” Bertha E. Laird

How about you?

Do you love Jesus? He saved you from sin and has given you a new life as one of His children. You can use your mouth to praise and thank Him and say that you love Him. But sometimes people say one thing, and their actions say something else. That’s why it’s important to also show your love by the things you do. Say you love Him and show it by obeying Him.
