Today's Verse

Ephesians 2:4-8 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

It was Friday evening, and Roland and his friend Sam were playing catch in the backyard. They had a baseball game in the morning and were getting in some catching practice before it got dark.

Just as Roland was throwing the ball to Sam, his mom yelled from the kitchen, “Dinner!”

CRASH! Sam had looked away for just a second, and the ball went speeding past him and crashed right through Mr. Wilken’s window. “Oh no!” Roland yelled.

“What was that loud noise?” Mom asked, coming outside. Sam stood silently as Roland told his mom what had happened. “You’ll have to tell Mr. Wilken when he gets home,” Mom told him. “He may want you to pay for the window.”

“It was an accident though, Mom.”

“I know, but the window is still broken and will need to be fixed.”

After dinner, Mom walked Roland and Sam next door. When Mr. Wilken came

to the door, Roland nervously told him what had happened. “We’re really sorry, Mr. Wilken,” he said.

“Thank you for coming right over to tell me,” Mr. Wilken said. “I can see that it was an unfortunate accident, so I am not going to ask you to pay for it. Just make sure you’re more careful from now on.”

Mom thanked Mr. Wilken, and they walked back home.

“Wow, that was so nice of him,” Sam said when they were back in the kitchen. “Yeah,” said Roland. “We broke his window, but he’s not making us pay for it!” Mom nodded thoughtfully. “It reminds me of a verse in the Bible—Hebrews 4:16,

which says, ‘So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.’” She smiled at the boys. “Mr. Wilken showed you grace today, just as God shows grace to us. We don’t deserve it, but God freely offers it to us through His Son, Jesus. We only need to accept his gift of salvation and we will live eternally with Him.”

Roland smiled. “I sure am glad Mr. Wilken showed grace to us today—and that God shows us grace too.” • LISA FULLER
