Charged Up
After shopping at the mall, Cora and her mother headed for the parking lot and climbed into their car. “What’s the matter with the car?” asked Cora in alarm as her mother tried to start it. There was a slight grinding sound, and then silence.
“I don’t know,” Mom said, checking over everything on the panel. Suddenly she spotted it—the switch for the headlights was turned on. “Oh no!” she exclaimed. “The headlights didn’t come on automatically this morning when I thought they should, so I turned them on by hand and forgot to turn them off. Now the battery is dead.”
After asking a few people in the parking lot, Mom found a man with jumper cables in his car who helped them, and soon the car was running. “If you’re not going very far, you might want to stop at a service station and get a quick charge,” the man suggested.
“What’s a quick charge?” asked Cora as they started home. “And why does it matter if we’re not going very far?”
“When a car is running, it charges the battery, so the longer the car runs, the more the battery gets charged up,” Mom explained. “If the battery has been run down like ours was, you need to run the car for quite a while to completely recharge the battery. If you can’t run it long enough, the battery can be hooked up to a charger instead. That’s called a quick charge because it works faster than running the car for a long time.”
That evening, Cora told her dad all about their car trouble and the quick charge they had needed. “The man at the service station said the battery should be okay now,” she told him.
“Good,” said Dad. He reached for his Bible. “It’s time for us to get charged up again too.” He smiled when Cora looked at him curiously. “Reading the Bible is sort of like getting a charge. Focusing on all our daily activities and problems can sometimes make us feel run down. Reading God’s Word helps us get to know Jesus better and remember all He’s done for us. It reminds us that we need to rely on Him for the power we need to obey and serve Him every day.” •Ruth I. Jay
