Camisha’s Clay Vase
Camisha glanced around and quietly walked through the apartment. She didn’t want her mother to see the small package she carried. She tip-toed down the hall and into her room—but there was her mother, putting neatly folded clothing, fresh from the laundry, onto Camisha’s bed.
“Hi, sweetie,” said Mom. “What do you have there?”
“Hi, Mom. I, uh…” Camisha sighed. “This was supposed to be a present for Mother’s Day, but it didn’t turn out right. You don’t want it. Trust me. It…it’s ugly!”
“Maybe you should let me be the judge of that,” said Mom. She held out her hand. “Can I see it?” Camisha handed over an object wrapped in several layers of tissue paper. Mom unwrapped the gift and found a small vase made of clay. It was a bit lopsided, and a piece had chipped off the rim. Its blue paint was streaky in places. “You must have made this in art class at school,” Mom said, smiling as she held it up. “I love it!”
“You’re just saying that to make me feel better,” Camisha muttered.
“No, I’m not,” said Mom. “I love this because you made it and because it reminds me of one of my favorite Bible verses.”
“It does? Which one is that?” Camisha asked.
“Second Corinthians 4:7. That verse refers to our hearts as clay pots that are humble and imperfect. But it tells us we have a great treasure—the light of God’s salvation—shining in our hearts.”
Mom walked out onto the small balcony where she grew rose bushes in flower boxes. She picked a few of the beautiful blooms—yellow ones with soft pink edges—and set them carefully in the clay vase. Velvety petals hung down and covered the chipped rim. Mom took the vase into the kitchen, added a small amount of water, and placed it on the window sill over the sink.
“Wow! What a difference the flowers make!” Camisha said in amazement.
“Just like the difference Jesus makes in our hearts,” said Mom. “This little vase with flowers will be a reminder of the light Jesus gives us, and it will be an encouragement to let others see His light in my life.” LINDA HENTSCHEL
How about you?
Have you ever felt like a handmade clay pot—a bit lopsided, chipped, and generally imperfect? Well, in a way, you are. But remember that if you trust Jesus as your Savior, He has put the light of His Holy Spirit into your heart. He makes a huge difference in your life. When you trust in Him, His light shines in you so you can reflect His love and beauty to others.
