Today's Verse

1 Corinthians 2:9-14 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

“I just don’t understand!” William cried. He shoved his Bible away from him and slumped back in his chair. “How am I supposed to be a Christian if I don’t know everything there is to know about the Bible?”

Dad set his coffee mug on the kitchen table and sat down. “Well, you understand who Jesus is, don’t you? And how He died to save you from sin?”

William nodded. “Yes, but there are some things in the Bible that don’t make sense to me at all.” He pointed to his head. “When I try to wrap my brain around them, they just get all muddled up like a giant web.”

Dad pointed to a textbook nearby and asked, “What’s that?”

“Oh, that’s just my history book.”

“You mean you’re studying history in school again?” Dad raised an eyebrow. “Didn’t you learn it all last year?”

William laughed. “Dad, there’s no way I could learn everything in just one year. That’s why there are twelve years of school.”

“What?” Dad exclaimed. “You’ve got to have that many years of school? Why don’t they just teach you all you need to know the first year and get it over with?”

“Uh, because that would be total brain overload,” said William.

Dad smiled. “Then how do you expect to handle all the knowledge of the Bible in just a short time, especially when you’re still learning the basics? Just like we’re able to understand things better as we physically grow and mature, we also begin to understand the truth of God’s Word in a deeper way as we study it and grow spiritually.”

William cocked his head and furrowed his brows. “Do you know everything about the Bible?”

“No. Only God knows everything there is to know about the Bible,” answered Dad. “But He’s helping me learn more about the truth of His Word and how to grow in my faith, and I’ll try to explain what I can to you.”

William reached for his Bible and put it between him and Dad. “Maybe we could learn and grow together.” – Beth Anne Ingram

How about you?

Are you trying to wrap your mind around the whole Bible all at once? God’s way of thinking is so far above our human comprehension that it takes growing in His Spirit to more fully understand His Word. If we ask Him, God is more than willing to teach us. Learning about Jesus isn’t a crash course in Christianity—it’s a lifelong adventure.
