Today's Verse

Psalm 139:14-18 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

Mae tossed and turned in her bed. Tomorrow was her birthday, and she was too excited to sleep. She couldn’t stop thinking about her party. “Morning, please come soon!” Mae whispered as she slowly drifted off to sleep.

“Happy birthday!” Mom said as she walked into Mae’s bedroom the next morning with a tray of food.

“Sweet, breakfast in bed! Thanks, Mom,” Mae said as she took the tray.

School seemed to drag by that day. Mae eagerly watched the clock and jumped out of her seat as soon as the bell rang.

“Happy birthday, Mae! See ya at the party tonight,” her friend Nicole called to her.

“Yeah, thanks!” Mae called back. Birthdays are the best! she thought to herself.

When she got home, Mae raced upstairs to change for her party. As soon as her friends arrived, the party began! They played games, ate cake and ice cream, and watched as Mae opened her presents. It wasn’t long before the party was over and Mae’s friends went home.

Later that night, Mom came to tuck her in. “What’s the matter, honey?” she asked. “You seem a little down. Did something happen at your party?”

“Yeah,” said Mae. “It ended. I want my birthday to last forever! It’s the one day of the year when I’m special—the one time when I have a whole day just for me.”

“Mae, you’re special for more than just one day out of the year. First of all, your father and I love you very much, and we know you’re one of a kind. There is nobody in the whole wide world who is exactly like you. But most important of all, God loves you, even more than we ever could!”

Mae looked up and gave a sly smile. “Can I get presents every day?”

Mom laughed. “I don’t think we could afford that! But you do get the greatest gift of all every day, and it doesn’t cost a cent.”

“What’s that?” Mae asked.

“Jesus!” Mom answered. “He saved you from sin so you could have eternal life with Him.”

“You’re right,” Mae said. “That’s a lot better than a birthday!” Elena Ketner
