Bestselling Author
“Quick, Mom! Lisa and I don’t want to be late,” Ellie said impatiently as Mom dropped them off at their local library. “We really want a signed copy of Rachel Rivera’s latest book.”
Rachel Rivera was Ellie and Lisa’s favorite author. The cousins were forever exchanging novels. Now, the famous author was in town as part of a book tour to raise money for a reading charity.
“I can’t believe she’s here,” Ellie whispered once they were inside the library. “I’ve always wanted to meet her.”
There was a hush as the author gave a brief talk about her work. Next was the book signing.
“Wow, Rachel is really popular!” Lisa said as the line snaked around the room and out the door. “This is going to take forever. Everyone in town must be here.”
“It’ll be worth it,” Ellie said, holding Rachel’s latest book in her hands.
Finally, it was the girls’ turn to meet Rachel, who greeted them with a smile and sparkling eyes. “Good to meet you both! Thanks for waiting.”
“I can’t believe we’re actually meeting you!” Ellie said excitedly. “An amazing bestselling author.”
“Thank you,” Rachel said, signing both their books. “I’ve been fortunate to sell many books, and I’m grateful to everyone who reads them. But did you know there is one book that is the greatest bestseller of all time?”
The girls thought for a moment. “I know what it is!” said Lisa. “It’s the Bible. Our pastor mentioned it last month at youth group.”
“That’s right,” said Rachel. “Whenever I write a new book, I pray about it and remind myself that the Bible tells the greatest story of all—the story of how God became one of us so He could save us from sin and fix our broken world. I want my stories to point people to that story and the Author who wrote it.”
“Did you enjoy the book signing?” Ellie’s mom asked when they were on their way home.
The girls nodded. “Rachel told us that while we may think her books are amazing, the Bible is the greatest story ever told,” said Ellie. “I think it’s time for us to have another look at the bestselling book of all time!” • Cindy Lee
