Beautiful Blooms
Rachel was gardening with her grandma when her phone lit up. She put down the shovel and took off her green gloves. She crossed her fingers as she pulled her phone out and read the text. Then her shoulders slumped.
“Bad news?” Grandma asked.
“Yeah.” Rachel sighed. “Karen got the lead role in the musical, and I only have a small part.”
“Why are you disappointed?” Grandma asked.
“Because I’m just a supporting character. I’m not important.”
“Are you sure about that?” asked Grandma. “Remember what they say—‘there are no small parts, only small actors.’ Each part is important, and it’s the actor’s job to make that character shine.”
“Yeah, I guess.” Rachel didn’t sound convinced.
Grandma furrowed her brows and looked around the garden. Her eyes lit up when they rested on the sunflowers and roses. She looked at Rachel, who was buried in her phone.
“Rachel, do you think sunflowers are beautiful?”
Rachel looked up and nodded.
“Do you think roses are beautiful?”
Rachel nodded again.
“God thinks so too. He would know—He made them! Yet they’re completely different from each other. Roses are smaller than sunflowers, but they’re both beautiful.”
Grandma pointed to a cluster of red roses. “If the roses chose to shrivel up because they couldn’t be as big as the sunflowers, then the world would miss out on the beauty they bring to it. You have a choice, Rachel. You can go out there and glorify God with the chance you’ve been given, or you can sulk and miss a great opportunity.”
Rachel looked at the roses and sighed. “That reminds me of something my youth pastor said—that we can glorify God in both big and small things, and because we belong to Jesus, we bring glory to Him in everything we do.” She stuck her phone in her pocket. “Well, Grandma, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go be a beautiful rose. But first I need to go to Karen’s to congratulate her on being a sunflower!” Elizabeth Moeller
