An Amazing Change
Zoe shivered and pulled her cap down tighter as she stood with her mom in an outside courtyard. They were waiting to watch an ice sculptor carve the huge block of ice that stood in the center of the yard. Zoe shoved her hands into her pockets. “It’s so cold!” she exclaimed. “How much longer before he starts?”
“About five minutes,” Mom answered as she glanced at her watch. “Do you still want to wait?” Zoe nodded.
Soon an announcer stepped up on the platform. “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m so glad you could join us on this cold, snowy evening. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed as you watch what happens to this block of ice. Now, without further ado, I give you ice artist Sam Price!”
A man carrying several types of tools walked over to the block of ice. He began working with a chain saw, and the ice started taking on a whole new shape. Before long, a beautiful eagle with outstretched wings stood before them.
The sculptor made a wide, sweeping motion toward the eagle and then took a bow as the crowd erupted in loud cheers. “Wow! He’s good!” Zoe said. “That plain block of ice sure changed a lot. It’s—it’s amazing!”
Mom smiled. “Yes, it is.”
After admiring the eagle more closely, Zoe and Mom headed home. “Zoe, can you guess what this reminds me of?” Mom asked.
“The time Tommy brought icicles into the house, and that you’re glad this thing won’t melt all over the kitchen floor?” suggested Zoe with a grin.
Mom laughed. “That too, but can you think of something even more important?”
“Uhhh…I give up,” said Zoe. “What?”
“That sculptor gave the block of ice a whole new beauty,” said Mom, “and it reminds me of what Jesus does for us. The Bible says He makes us a ‘new creation’ when we trust Him as our Savior. When He enters our lives, we take on a whole new beauty.”
Zoe nodded. “That’s an amazing change too,” she said. “Even more amazing than the eagle.” -Annette S. Bury
