Already Beautiful
“I feel so ugly!” Kathryn muttered as her mother placed a pink geranium in
the flowerbed. “I can’t stand my red hair, my nose is too round, and I don’t dress like other girls my age. Can I get some makeup and new clothes? I want to be pretty!”
Mom dug a hole for the next geranium. “You think having the right clothes and wearing makeup will make you pretty?” she asked.
“Yes!” Kathryn spouted. “Or at least it’d be a good start.”
Mom was silent as she planted a red geranium, then a purple one, and then an orange one. Kathryn was beginning to wonder if Mom forgot she was even there when Mom turned back to her and spoke.
“Kathryn, all these flowers are pretty, aren’t they? They’re all different and beautiful and crafted by God.”
Oh no, Mom’s going to give me that you’re one-of-a-kind speech again, Kathryn thought with dismay. She was surprised then by Mom’s next question. “So which is the prettiest?”
Kathryn surveyed each flower and shrugged.
Mom smiled. “The pink one reminds me of children, the red one makes me think of roses, the purple and tawny pink ones remind me of a sunset sky, but the white one reminds me of something more noble—something different.” She paused. “It’s not flashy like the tawny pink or deep like the red but a beautiful, pure white. It can be in any flower arrangement and still stand out as its own kind of beautiful. Doesn’t that make it special?”
“I guess so,” said Kathryn.
Mom smiled. “Kathryn, you are this white geranium. You’re pure because of Jesus. There’s nothing wrong with trying to look nice with a little makeup and fashionable clothes, but that’s not where you should look to find your worth and beauty. Jesus made you the way you are, and you’re beautiful and valuable because you belong to Him.”
Kathryn thought to herself for a moment, then smiled. “You’re right,” she said. “I’m already beautiful!” – Caitlyn Pray
How about you?
Do you ever feel ugly? Do you feel like you don’t measure up because you don’t look a certain way or wear the same things as other kids your age? Remember that God made you the way you are, and if you trust in Jesus, you’re beautiful and pure because of Him. He’s what gives you value and beauty—not how you look or what you wear. Jesus makes you beautiful.
