Adoption Excitement
Lila was supposed to be coloring a picture of Pharaoh’s daughter finding Baby Moses in the Nile River, but she kept getting distracted by Michael. She watched as he fidgeted on the other side of the table. He’d check the clock, look back at his coloring, twirl his pencil, shuffle his feet, and then repeat. What was going on?
Almost as if Mr. Black could read her thoughts, her teacher touched Michael on the shoulder and gave him a smile. Then Mr. Black asked everyone to put their work away and gather on the carpet squares.
This is odd, thought Lila. We don’t usually end Sunday school like this.
The kids moved swiftly, excited by the change in routine. When they were seated, Mr. Black’s son, Connor, came in carrying a puppy. Squeals filled the room as eight children all tried to touch the dog at once. They were rewarded with a wagging tail and puppy kisses. Mr. Black allowed a few moments of chaos before picking up the puppy and establishing order.
“Everyone, this is Murphy. He joined our family two weeks ago, and we all love him. I thought you’d like to meet him, so I had Connor bring him in.” Mr. Black handed the puppy back to Connor and turned to Michael. “But today, Michael has news that’s even more exciting than our new puppy. This afternoon, Michael is going to the airport to meet his new little sister, Becca. His parents traveled to another country to adopt her, and today they’re bringing her home.” Mr. Black paused to let the wonder settle in. “Becca has been adopted into Michael’s family. We don’t know why she was placed for adoption, but we know God always loved her, and now Michael’s family does too.”
Michael couldn’t stop smiling, and Lila finally understood why he had kept wiggling during class—he was excited to meet his new sister!
Mr. Black continued. “Just like Moses was adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter in the Bible and Michael’s family adopted Becca, each of us is also adopted. When you trust Jesus as your Savior, you are adopted into God’s family. Those of us who know Jesus are brothers and sisters in Christ. Now that’s something to really get excited about!” – Shanda Sprick
How about you?
Do you know someone who was adopted? Did you know that when you trust in Jesus, you are adopted by God? Moses, Esther, and even Jesus were adopted while they lived on earth. It’s beautiful when families are formed by adoption, both earthly families and the family of God. Let others know how excited you are to be a part of God’s family.
