Today's Verse

Proverbs 2:3-5 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

“Mom, you’ve got to see this!” Angie called as her mother walked down the hall.

“Have you memorized your Bible verse already and finished your homework?” Mom asked, stepping into the room.

Angie rolled her eyes and pointed to her computer screen. “I’ve created a digital scrapbook of our vacation!” She opened the first page that showed her holding a starfish. It was the first time she had ever seen one. Beside the picture she had typed, Starfish aren’t really fish because they don’t have gills or fins.

Mom squeezed Angie’s shoulder. “It was fun finding the starfish, wasn’t it?”

“Let me show you the other pages.” Angie scrolled through all the pictures. Swimming. Building sandcastles. Eating ice cream. Each photo had a note attached.

“You’ve done an amazing job,” Mom said. “They tell a wonderful story about our vacation. But what about the Bible verse you’re supposed to memorize?”

Angie rattled off the verse without stopping to breathe. “‘Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.’ Deuteronomy 11:18. See, I did learn it.”

“You can say the words, but do you understand them?” Mom asked.

Angie shrugged. “We’re just supposed to memorize them.”

“Yes, but you don’t understand why, do you?” Angie shook her head, and Mom pointed to the pictures on her screen. “Tell me, why did you put together this photo album?” she asked.

“Because I want to remember all the fun we had, and I don’t want to forget all the new things I learned.”

“So you’re creating a scrapbook to store your memories.” Mom pointed to Angie’s Bible. “God’s Word tells the story of all the promises He made to the people of the Bible, and how Jesus fulfills them all.”

“So the Bible is like God’s scrapbook,” Angie said. “The people who wrote it didn’t want to forget all the ways He’d blessed them. And they wanted to share that story with others so they would know it too.”

“That’s right,” Mom said. “Just like you’ll share this scrapbook with your friends.”

Angie smiled. “Maybe I should start a digital scrapbook of Bible verses to help me remember that!” – Christine L. Henderson

How about you?

Do you memorize Bible verses for school or church? Do you think about what they mean or just rattle off the words? The Bible tells the story of Jesus and how He fulfills every one of God’s promises. Fixing His Word in our hearts and minds helps us remember all He’s done for us and tell others about Him. So keep memorizing verses and remember how He’s been with you and guided you.
