Today's Verse

1 Corinthians 12:14-25 in KJV, NKJV, NIV, ERV

Bible version changes do not affect the Key audio or "Today's Key Verse," below.

Sarah stopped as she walked past Jonathan practicing the trumpet in the living room. “That sounds awful!” she exclaimed. “No one can sing with that.”

Jonathan gave her a funny look, then went back to practicing his part for the church orchestra.

Sarah went on to the den to see if Jasmine would play with her. “I’m sorry, Sarah, but I need to practice. I’m playing in church on Sunday.”

Sarah’s face fell in disappointment. “Okay.” She plopped down on the floor to listen to her sister play the piano. “Jasmine, that doesn’t sound like anything I’ve ever heard. I don’t hear a song in it.”

Jasmine laughed. “You’re right, Sarah. It’s just a bunch of chords. But listen as I sing.” Jasmine began to play the chords again, but this time she sang along with them. “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound…” Sarah was amazed. It sounded beautiful.

Just then, Mom walked in. “I heard what you were saying, Jasmine. It reminds me of what God tells us to do as His church. We all need to work together. Our little part may not seem like much on its own, but God uses all of us to do His work and show His love to the world. We each have a part of something bigger.”

Jonathan walked in. “That sounds like something our director at church told us. The part for my trumpet is small in the orchestra, but it’s important. When we don’t play, the song just doesn’t sound the same.”

Sarah thought about it. “What is my part, then? I don’t play any instruments.”

Mom smiled. “Sarah, you have a very important part in the music even without playing an instrument. Emily and Jack’s mom told me what a big help you are during choir practice. Their dad has to work during choir practice, but she can come because you play with Emily and Jack in the back of the church and help keep them busy and out of trouble. We all have parts to play in sharing Jesus’ love as a church, and you are doing yours!”

Sarah smiled. “Hey, Jasmine,” she said, “why don’t you play those chords again so we can all sing along?” – Myrical Barton

How about you?

What part do you have to play at your church? Maybe you play with kids in the nursery or help your teacher clean up after Sunday school. Even if what you do doesn’t seem all that important, God uses all our parts to make us work together as Christians and show people His love. Ask Him to show you how you can help His body of believers, then play your part.
