A Famous Author
“Avery!” Freya exclaimed. “Do you remember the book Miss Clemens read to our class a few weeks ago—the one about an orange elephant?”
Avery nodded. “Sure, that was a really funny book!”
“Well, guess who’s coming to my house for dinner tonight?” said Freya, bouncing up and down on her toes in excitement.
“Who?” Avery grinned. “The orange elephant?”
Freya laughed. “Almost! But no. It’s Rebecca Briggs—the woman who wrote the book! My mom knew her in college, but her name changed after she got married, so Mom didn’t realize she was the Rebecca who wrote the book until—”
“Wait a minute,” Avery interrupted. “You mean the author of The Orange Elephant is coming to your house? Your mom actually knows her?”
“Yep,” said Freya. “And Mom says you can come over and meet her while she’s here! She said you can come for dinner if you like.”
“Really? Wow! I’ll have to ask my mom, but I’m sure she’ll say it’s okay.”
After school, Avery hurried out when she saw her mom’s car pull up to the curb. “Rebecca Briggs and Freya’s mom were friends in college,” Avery told her mom on the way home. “Isn’t that cool? I wish I knew an author too.”
Mom smiled. “You do, Avery—one who is even more important than the author of The Orange Elephant. We have several copies of His book at home—in fact, you have one of your own.”
Avery couldn’t believe it. “I do? What book?” she asked in surprise. “I don’t think I know the author of any of my books.”
“Sure you do,” said Mom. “You have a Bible, and God is the author of the Bible. You know Him, don’t you? You know Jesus as your Savior.”
Avery smiled. “I never would have thought of that, but it’s true, isn’t it?”
Mom nodded. “The Bible was written by many different people, but God is its author because the Holy Spirit worked through its writers to speak His truth. He did that so we would know God’s plan to save His people from sin and put our trust in Jesus.”
Avery giggled. “Freya will be surprised when I tell her I know an author too—a very famous one!”

How about you?
Do you know any authors? If you know Jesus, you do. Through the Holy Spirit, God inspired people (such as Moses, Paul, and John) to write His truth in the Bible, so it is God, not any person, who is really the author of the Bible. And God wrote it for you. Do you read it? Next time you read the Bible, think of it as a message from God telling you something He wants you to know.
