A man named James was directed by the Holy Spirit to write these words to the first Christians hundreds of years ago: "What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you?  You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God.  When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures."(James 4:1-3)  Wow!  Pretty powerful words for quarrelers, don't you think?  But God inspired James to write those words to CRISTIANS because He wants us to remember to put other people and their needs before our own desires.  The fact is we will always have "desires that battle within", but through Jesus, and humble dependence on Him, we can overcome!  We can daily win that battle as we walk and talk with Jesus by reading the Bible and praying.  Remember though, it’s not about just praying.  As James would say, it's about praying with the right motives.  God WILL give us what we desire, when we begin to desire what He desires.  To get started, why not read the whole book of James (or at least the rest of chapter 4) and ask God to show you what He desires.  Then, ask Him to make those things YOUR desires.  It may not happen overnight, but God can and does change the desires of those who are humble and willing.
